Brief history of the Breed:
The Gordon Setter, or the Black and Tan of years ago,  strangely is the  only gundog among the native breeds of Scotland. There are many records showing that the Black and Tan existed as long ago at the year 1600, although it was the 4th Duke, Alexandar Gordon, who was largely responsible  for establishing the breed. Whilst often denied, the story goes that Duke Alexander had heard of a shepherd's collie bitch that became an excellent finder of grouse at at time when his own Setters were at fault. Having confirmed these facts he decided to breed from her and thereby originated the Black and Tan Setter. Following the death of the 5th Duke the Gordon Castle Setters were sold, but later re-established by the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, the 6th Duke. In those days the aim was for the most perfect working Setter and it was not until much later that dog shows became more popular and breeders thought in terms of beauty as well as brains.

Characteristics of the Gordon Setter

The Gordon is an extremely intelligent dog of bold character and whilst he can be very outgoing, in some company he can be equally reserved. The deduction that can perhaps be  already made up his mind about you. However, when he has made his mind up that he likes you, then the roles are quickly reversed and he will soon become your owner. Whilst in most cased the character - or perhaps a better word to use would be temparement - of the Gordon is with people excellent, with other dogs he can have his moments, but after all do we always like everyone we meet? Despite the outward bold impression he gives - that he looks the world in the eye without fear of anything - he has in most cases a very soft centre and subject to physical correction can soon become subdued and lose that lovely outgoing personality associated with the breed. To get the best  out of your relationship with a Gordon you must challenge and channel his intelligence; if you do this, you will have a handsome, loyal and loving companion. In a family situation, a Gordon is always ready for as much exercise as his owner is able to give him. With children he can be a loyal and protective friend. He can be determined to find out,  and make his own mind up about situations. Once told not to do something, he can appear to observe his master's wishes. However, the chances are that sometimes in the future ( be it a day, week or year later) it is more than probable that you will catch him trying again  to find out for himself.  It's not that he's disobedient, just very curious by nature.  To encapsulate the Gordon's character: he will never be sorry for his actions although at the time he will make a good show of being so. Sorry is not a word he understands, or pretends  no to. He will only be sorry you have caught him before he was able to complete his actions.  What is for sure is that if you like the great outdoors and the company of an interesting and interested companion, you will never be sorry for becoming a member of that select band who are proud to say they are owned by a Gordon Setter.

General Appearance

The Gordon Setter is a good-sized, sturdily build, black and tan dog, well muscled with plenty of bone and substance, but active, upstanding and stylish, appearing capable of doing a full day's work in the field. He has a strong, rather short back, with well sprung ribs and a short  tail. His head is fairly heavy and his bearing is intelligent, noble and dignified, showing no signs of shyness and viciousness. Clear colors and straight or slightly waved coat are correct. He suggests strenght and stamina rather than extreme speed. The Gordon Setter is alert, gay, and nterested. He is fearless and willing, intelligent and capable. He is loyal and affectionate and strong-minded enough to stand the rigors of training.
